# First steps > A tour of the DooFiles screen: the folder panel, the toolbar, the file list, selecting files, the right-click menu and the keyboard shortcuts, plus the settings to review first. Source: https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/first-steps --- ## Overview Open DooFiles from **DooFiles › File manager**, or click the folder in the WordPress toolbar at the top of any admin page. The file manager takes the whole space to the right of the admin menu. The folder panel and the file list scroll on their own, so the toolbar always stays in view. [SCREENSHOT_HERE: DooFiles › File manager with numbered callouts: 1 the folder panel, 2 the toolbar, 3 the file list, 4 the password indicator] ## The folder panel The panel on the left has: - **New folder**, to create a folder in the folder you have open. - **The folder tree.** It starts at the folder where WordPress is installed, shown with its real name on your server, such as `public_html`. Click a folder to open it, or the arrow next to it to expand it. DooFiles remembers which folders you left open. - **Trash**, **Activity** and **Space**: the [Trash](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/views/trash), the [Activity](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/views/activity) log and the [Space](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/views/space) view. Space shows the total size of your site. - **The password indicator**, at the bottom. See [The password indicator](#the-password-indicator). To make the panel wider or narrower, drag its right edge. Double-click the edge to go back to the default width. ## The toolbar | Element | What it does | |---|---| | **The breadcrumbs** | The path of the folder you have open. Click a part to go back to it. Click the name of the open folder to refresh it | | **New file** | Creates a file in the open folder | | **Upload files** | Opens the file picker to upload files to the open folder. When you have uploads in the list, a counter appears next to it and opens the uploads panel | | **Search in this folder…** | Searches files by name in the open folder and all its subfolders | See [Browse and search](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/files/browse-and-search) and [Uploads](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/files/uploads). ## The file list The list shows the folders and files of the open folder: | Column | What it shows | |---|---| | **Name** | The name of the folder or file. Click it to open it | | A padlock | Marks a [private folder](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/security/private-folders) | | **Size** | The size of the file, or of everything inside the folder | | **Files** | How many files a folder contains | | **Modified** | When it last changed | | **Permissions** | Its permissions on the server, such as `0644` | Click **Name**, **Size**, **Files** or **Modified** to sort the list. Click again to reverse the order. DooFiles remembers your choice in this browser. Folder sizes and file counts come from the Space view, which measures your folders in the background. Until it finishes its first measurement, those columns may be empty. ## Select files - **Click** a row to select it. - **Ctrl + click** (**Cmd + click** on a Mac) adds or removes a row from the selection. - **Shift + click** selects every row between the last one you selected and this one. With rows selected, a bar at the top of the list shows how many are selected and the actions you can apply to all of them, such as **Compress** or **Trash**. **Clear selection** empties it. ## The right-click menu Right-click a row to see what you can do with it: | Action | What it does | |---|---| | **Open** | Opens a folder | | **Preview** | Shows an image, a video or a PDF file in the [media viewer](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/files/media-viewer) | | **Edit** | Opens a text file in the [editor](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/files/editor). It reads **View** when the file cannot be changed | | **Download** | Downloads the file | | **Rename** | Changes its name | | **Make private…** | Closes one of your own folders to the web. See [Private folders](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/security/private-folders) | | **Extract** | Extracts a zip file into the same folder | | **Compress** | Creates a zip file with the selected rows | | **Trash** | Moves the selected rows to the Trash | The menu shows only the actions that apply to what you selected. Right-click an empty part of the list to create a folder or a file, upload files, select everything or refresh the folder. See [Manage files](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/files/manage-files). [SCREENSHOT_HERE: The right-click menu of a file in the list, with Edit, Download, Rename, Compress and Trash] ## Keyboard shortcuts | Keys | What they do | |---|---| | **Enter** | Opens the selected folder or file | | **F2** | Renames the selected row | | **Delete** | Moves the selected rows to the Trash | | **Ctrl + A** (**Cmd + A** on a Mac) | Selects every row in the list | | **Escape** | Clears the selection. It also closes dialogs and the media viewer | | **Ctrl + S** (**Cmd + S** on a Mac) | Saves the file in the editor | ## The password indicator The indicator at the bottom of the folder panel tells you whether changes to code ask for your password: | It reads | What it means | |---|---| | *Code changes ask for your password* | DooFiles asks for your password before you change code, folders or server settings | | *Unlocked · 9:41* | You confirmed your password. Changes to code do not ask again until the time runs out. Click **Lock** to end it now | | *Code changes don't ask for a password* | Password confirmation is turned off in **DooFiles › Settings** | | *Read-only mode* | You can browse, view and download, but not change files. See [Read-only mode](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/security/read-only-mode) | | *No valid license* | You can only browse the folders. See [License activation](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/license-activation) | See [Password confirmation](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/security/password-confirmation). [SCREENSHOT_HERE: The bottom of the folder panel with the password indicator reading Unlocked and the Lock button] ## On a phone or tablet On narrow screens, the folder panel moves above the list, and the page scrolls as a whole. Every tool works the same way. On a touch screen, tap a row to select it: the bar at the top of the list shows the same actions as the right-click menu. ## What to do first 1. **Activate your license**, if you have not yet. See [License activation](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/license-activation). 2. **Review the settings** in **DooFiles › Settings**: how long the password confirmation lasts, how long the Trash, the backups and the activity are kept, and the largest upload. See [Settings](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/settings). 3. **Turn on your second factor**, if you want an extra check before sensitive actions. See [Second factor](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/security/second-factor). 4. **Open a file** in the editor, and try the Trash: delete a test file and restore it, so you know how to undo a mistake before you need to. ## Troubleshooting | Problem | What to do | |---|---| | The Size and Files columns are empty | DooFiles has not measured your folders yet. Open **Space** and click **Scan now**, or wait for the daily measurement. See [Space](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/views/space) | | The right-click menu only shows Open | Your license is not active. See [License activation](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/license-activation) | | The menu has no Rename, Compress or Trash | DooFiles is in read-only mode. See [Read-only mode](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/security/read-only-mode) | | The folder panel is too narrow | Drag its right edge, or double-click it to go back to the default width | Need more help?
