# Space > How DooFiles measures the space your site takes: the total size, the breakdown by type of file, the largest folders and files, the size of each folder in the list, and how the measurement stays up to date. Source: https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/views/space --- ## Overview The Space view shows what takes up room on your server: the total size of your site, how much each type of file takes, and the largest folders and files. The same measurements give the size and the number of files of each folder in the file list, and the total in the WordPress toolbar. DooFiles measures your folders in the background, in short rounds, so your site does not slow down. ## Open the Space view Click **Space** in the folder panel. Its button also shows the total size of your site. [SCREENSHOT_HERE: The Space view with the total size, the bar by type of file, the largest folders, the largest files and the trash and backups] ## What the Space view shows | Section | What it shows | |---|---| | **Total size** | Everything inside the folder of WordPress | | **By type of file** | How much each type takes: Images, Video, Audio, Documents, Code and fonts, Archives and backups, and Other | | **Largest folders** | Up to 40 folders that take the most space, with their size and number of files | | **Largest files** | Up to 30 files that take the most space | | **Trash and backups** | How much the DooFiles [Trash](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/views/trash) and the [backups](https://doothemes.com/docs/doofiles/files/backups) take, counted apart | Below the title, DooFiles shows when the last full scan finished: *Last full scan: Oct 24, 2026, 9:30.* Click a folder in **Largest folders** to open it in the file list. ## Folder sizes in the file list The **Size** and **Files** columns of the file list show, for each folder, how much it takes and how many files it contains, counting everything inside it. They come from the same measurements. Until the first scan finishes, these columns may be empty. ## How the measurement stays up to date DooFiles keeps its measurements in a small index, so it does not have to go through your folders every time you open one: - **Every day**, it measures your folders again, in the background. You can turn this off in **DooFiles › Settings** with **Measure the folders every day**. - **Scan now** starts a new measurement right away. While it runs, the view shows how many folders are done and how many are left: *Measuring folders: 120 done, 35 to go. You can keep working.* - **When you change files with DooFiles**, such as uploading, deleting or moving, it measures that folder again and updates the totals right away. Changes made in other ways, such as by FTP, by a plugin or by WordPress updates, show up after the next scan. A scan runs in short rounds, and continues on its own if it is interrupted. You can keep working in DooFiles, or close the page, while it runs. ## What is not counted - **Anything outside the folder of WordPress**, and shortcuts (symbolic links) that point to other places on your server. - **The private folder of DooFiles**: the Trash and the backups appear apart, in **Trash and backups**. - **Folders that the server does not let DooFiles read.** The view tells you how many: *2 folders could not be read and are not counted.* The view reminds you: *Sizes count what is inside the WordPress folder, without following links. The DooFiles trash and backups are counted apart.* ## The total in the WordPress toolbar The folder in the WordPress toolbar shows the total size of your site, and opens the file manager. Before the first scan, or without an active license, it reads *Files*. The first scan of a large site can take a few minutes | | The Size and Files columns are empty | The first scan has not finished yet. Open **Space** and check its progress | | A folder I changed by FTP shows its old size | Changes made outside DooFiles show up after the next scan. Click **Scan now** | | *2 folders could not be read and are not counted.* | The server does not let PHP read those folders. Ask your hosting provider to check their permissions | | The total is different from the one in my hosting panel | DooFiles counts only the folder of WordPress, without links. Your hosting may also count databases, emails and other sites | | The toolbar reads *Files* instead of a size | The first scan has not finished yet, or your license is not active | | The scan never updates on its own | Check that **Measure the folders every day** is on, and that WordPress runs its scheduled tasks.
