DooFiles

First steps

A tour of the DooFiles screen: the folder panel, the toolbar, the file list, selecting files, the right-click menu and the keyboard shortcuts, plus the settings to review first.

Last updated: Oct 24, 2026

Overview

Open DooFiles from DooFiles › File manager, or click the folder in the WordPress toolbar at the top of any admin page. The file manager takes the whole space to the right of the admin menu. The folder panel and the file list scroll on their own, so the toolbar always stays in view.

The folder panel

The panel on the left has:

  • New folder, to create a folder in the folder you have open.
  • The folder tree. It starts at the folder where WordPress is installed, shown with its real name on your server, such as public_html. Click a folder to open it, or the arrow next to it to expand it. DooFiles remembers which folders you left open.
  • Trash, Activity and Space: the Trash, the Activity log and the Space view. Space shows the total size of your site.
  • The password indicator, at the bottom. See The password indicator.

To make the panel wider or narrower, drag its right edge. Double-click the edge to go back to the default width.

The file list

The list shows the folders and files of the open folder:

A padlockMarks a private folder
SizeThe size of the file, or of everything inside the folder
FilesHow many files a folder contains
ModifiedWhen it last changed
PermissionsIts permissions on the server, such as 0644

Click Name, Size, Files or Modified to sort the list. Click again to reverse the order. DooFiles remembers your choice in this browser.

Folder sizes and file counts come from the Space view, which measures your folders in the background. Until it finishes its first measurement, those columns may be empty.

Select files

  • Click a row to select it.
  • Ctrl + click (Cmd + click on a Mac) adds or removes a row from the selection.
  • Shift + click selects every row between the last one you selected and this one.

With rows selected, a bar at the top of the list shows how many are selected and the actions you can apply to all of them, such as Compress or Trash. Clear selection empties it.

The right-click menu

Right-click a row to see what you can do with it:

ActionWhat it does

ExtractExtracts a zip file into the same folder
CompressCreates a zip file with the selected rows

The menu shows only the actions that apply to what you selected. Right-click an empty part of the list to create a folder or a file, upload files, select everything or refresh the folder.

See Manage files.

On a phone or tablet

On narrow screens, the folder panel moves above the list, and the page scrolls as a whole. Every tool works the same way. On a touch screen, tap a row to select it: the bar at the top of the list shows the same actions as the right-click menu.

What to do first

  1. Activate your license, if you have not yet. See License activation.
  2. Review the settings in DooFiles › Settings: how long the password confirmation lasts, how long the Trash, the backups and the activity are kept, and the largest upload. See Settings.
  3. Turn on your second factor, if you want an extra check before sensitive actions. See Second factor.
  4. Open a file in the editor, and try the Trash: delete a test file and restore it, so you know how to undo a mistake before you need to.
