DooFiles

Requirements

What your server, your browser and your account need to run DooFiles, the PHP extensions it uses, the services it connects to, and what to have ready before you install it.

Server requirements

  • WordPress 6.4 or higher, kept up to date. DooFiles is tested with WordPress 7.1.
  • PHP 8.0 or higher. DooFiles is tested with PHP 8.5.
  • The PHP OpenSSL extension. DooFiles uses it to store your license key securely and to protect the second factor. Without it, the license cannot be activated, and DooFiles shows This server cannot encrypt the license: the PHP OpenSSL extension is missing.
  • Write permissions. The files and folders you want to change must be writable by the user that runs PHP on your server. DooFiles also creates a private folder of its own inside wp-content, for its trash and backups.
  • Outgoing HTTPS connections to the Doothemes licensing service. Some hosts block them by default. If yours does, ask your provider to allow the address listed in External services.
  • The PHP tokenizer extension, to check the syntax of PHP files before you save them. Without it, DooFiles saves PHP files without that check and tells you so: The PHP tokenizer extension is not available, so the syntax was not checked.
  • The PHP zip extension, to compress files and folders and to extract zip files. Without it, those two actions are not available.
  • A current version of PHP, such as 8.3 or newer, for better performance and active security support.
  • A server cron job that calls wp-cron.php regularly. WordPress runs scheduled tasks only when someone visits your site. DooFiles uses them to empty old items from the trash, remove old backups and activity, check your license twice a day and measure the size of your folders. On a site with few visits, these tasks fall behind.
  • Enough disk space. The trash and the backups of the files you save use space on your server. You decide how long they are kept in DooFiles › Settings. See Retention.
  • HTTPS on your site. DooFiles works without it, but your password and your files travel encrypted only with HTTPS.

Your web server

DooFiles works with Apache, LiteSpeed, nginx and IIS. There is one difference, for private folders:

Web serverPrivate folders
Apache and LiteSpeedClosed on their own, with a rule that DooFiles adds
IISClosed on their own, with a rule that DooFiles adds
nginxNeed a rule in the configuration of your server. DooFiles shows you the exact rule to add

Before a folder becomes private, DooFiles sends a request to your own site to confirm that the folder is closed. Your server must be able to reach its own address.

See Server configuration for nginx and for the other settings of your server.

Uploads

You do not need to raise the upload limits of PHP to upload large files. DooFiles sends files over 1 MB in parts that fit the limit of your server, and puts them together at the end.

The largest file you can upload is set in DooFiles › Settings, and is 2 GB by default. See Limits.

If your site is behind a proxy, such as Cloudflare, or your server cuts long requests, see Server configuration.

Your browser

A current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, with JavaScript turned on. DooFiles also works on tablets and phones, with a simpler layout.

Who can use DooFiles

DooFiles is for the administrators of your site:

  • On a single site: users with the Administrator role. They receive access when you activate the plugin.
  • On a multisite network: network administrators.

Editors, authors and other roles cannot open DooFiles.

If your wp-config.php file sets DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT or DISALLOW_FILE_MODS, DooFiles works in read-only mode: you can browse, view and download files, but not change them. To change files with DooFiles, remove that line. See Read-only mode.

External services

Your server connects to these services. If your host restricts outgoing connections, ask your provider to allow them.

ServiceAddressUsed for
Doothemesedge.wupdater.comActivating and checking your license, and plugin updates
Your own siteThe address of your siteChecking that private folders are closed to the web

DooFiles never sends your files, your users or your content to these services.

What you need before installing

  • Your DooFiles license key. You receive it by email after your purchase, and you can find it in Licenses in your Doothemes account. See License activation.
  • An administrator account on your site.

Before you continue

  • Check that your server has the PHP OpenSSL extension and can make outgoing HTTPS connections. Tools › Site Health warns you when a recommended PHP extension is missing, and its Info tab shows your PHP version.
  • Have your license key at hand.
  • Sign in to WordPress as an administrator.

When your server meets these requirements, continue with Installation.
